Poverty Island Bound!

Well the weekend weather forecast is looking picture perfect for this time of year, so I'm making another attempt at kayaking to Poverty & Summer Islands!

In 2005, my friend Chuck "Pathfinder" Hayden of Fortune Bay Expedition Team placed a geocache on Poverty Island. Since no one has logged the cache since 2007, I'm making a run for his hidden treasure! Check out details of his geocache here.

Poverty Island Expedition Plan

Sat, Sept 25:
  • Launch from Fairport (mainland), first destination Summer Island (2.39 miles).
  • Paddle along shoreline of Summer Island (approx 3.2 miles)
  • Set course for Poverty Island (1.04 miles).
  • Set up camp at Poverty Island.
Sun, Sept 26:
  • Explore Poverty Island.
  • Locate Chuck's cache!
  • Set course for Summer Island.
  • Set course and land at Fairport (mainland).

These maps will give you an idea of my route (click map for larger version), the location of Poverty Island and Chuck’s cache...both are located about 7 miles offshore from Garden Peninsula (SE of Escanaba) in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan.

Join me on my Poverty Island voyage by visiting my new page, "My Adventures"! My Adventure page includes interactive live SPOT tracking so that you can track my progress which is updated automatically every 10 minutes. (There is also a link on the page that will allow you to see a larger map.)

Please note: The tracks currently on the page reflect my beta testing the system tonight in order to provide data on the map so you can get an idea of how it works. Once I embark for Poverty Island (or any future expeditions), the map will update accordingly.

Here's to adventures wherever they may lead!

Gale force winds (30 kts) earned me an escort across the Mighty Mac!!

So a friend of mine made this comment to me, "Leave it to you to find an escort service on the Mighty Mac!"

Frickin hilaaaarious!!! :D

I'm not launching this morning as planned. Winds still high at 15-25kts (g 33kts). Waves 4-8'. Light rain falling as this low pressure being pushed out by high pressure. Afternoon looks best launch conditions. Will keep posted/updated.

I'm on Summer Isle! Been a good voyage. Having lunch then onward another 1.1mi to Poverty Isle :)

I'm standing on Poverty Isle near the lighthouse looking for Chuck's cache. A great voyage! Beautiful water! Gorgeous weather! Life is good :)

Still looking for cache! I took a break...I brought a couple treats with me to celebrate: a small bottle of pear liquor to toast the cache (when I find it!) & a fortune cookie. This is the fortune: "There is a prospect of a thrilling time ahead for you". Saweeeet!!! :)

Well, it appears Chuck's has been stolen by a good fer nuthin scallawaggin one-eyed, peg-legged of a rascally pirate!! Avast me hearties....if I catch the no good varmit, I'm gonna make him walk th' ole plank to a one way swim to Davy jones' locker!!!

A freighter passing by...they must have sensed me cracking open the beef jerkey for dinner :)

Deb! This is very entertaining! Keep sending the updates!

Found a perfect spot for my hammock-tent amidst a grove of cedars. With a beautiful view of the water and setting sun, I'm in heaven! This island may called "Poverty", but I feel rich for being here! I gathered wood for a small fire tonight. Anybody have a good ghost story to tell? :)

BTW, Chuck & I brained stormed....we're not allowing the pirate thief to dampen our geocache spirits. I found an old pint sized can of "Navy Grinding Compound"...I emptied & cleaned the can. Temp cache established, wahoo! In the words of Chuck, "We adapted and overcame...pure expeditionary!" Yah, you betcha :)

I just found a tennis ball while gathering fire wood...yep, you guessed it! A Wilson!! Every good Castaway deserves w companion :)

The Wilson Clan is growing! I just found a volleyball...another Wilson!! (BTW, I'm posting pics to Chuck at Fortune Bay Expedition Team if you want to see "live" pics. Thanks Cap'n, you're the best!)

I've turned off my SPOT for the night. I'll turn it back on in the morning. G'nite all...

No, you're the best for sending them to us. It is great to take the trip with you. Even if through pictures and words.

Good afternoon! I landed safely a couple hours ago in Fairport Marina. I'm loaded up, refueled with delicious whitefish dinner at Sherry's Port Bar (highly recommend!)...heading back soon to Traverse City.

It was a short & sweet trip, but one of my faves I feel large in part because of everyone's support, cheers & messages...I'm touched by that. I'm getting a kick out of how much everyone enjoyed tracking my voyage. Made it seem like y'all were out there w me! Thank you for joining me :)

Here's to adventures wherever they may lead!
Peace,
Deb a.k.a. "aqua phoenix"

I'm glad you had a good adventure...
